Some people thrive upon adrenalin, whilst others do not. Some people love the hustle and bustle of city living and find that to be calming to their temperament. Others find the busy streets anything but calming to their soul. One person can relax and unwind in an open countryside, whilst another will feel a little "twitchy".
Calmness is a state of mind that is individual to the temperament of each person. We are all unique and what is calming to one person may be extremely unsettling to another. What we are familiar with and the environment that we were brought up in inevitably play a key role. Our tastes and preferences are shaped from a very young age, and these include the environments in which we feel most comfortable.
There are many times in life when you for whatever reason cannot be in an environment to which you are most suited. A city girl might end up in the quiet space of the countryside or a country boy might have to work and live in the busy city streets and offices. In this eventuality, you have to find a way to create calm for yourself so as to feel peaceful and comfortable in your everyday world.
The key to this is accepting the bottom line and choosing to make the most of where you are. Instead of focusing upon what you are missing out on, focus on what you can enjoy in the present. This principle holds true not just of living in an environment that is not wholly to your taste; it applies to situations where perhaps you are in a job which is not your favorite, or a relationship which is not as perfect as you might wish, and so on.
You create your own calm through the way in which you choose to think. Calmness is linked to acceptance. This doesn't mean that you should not strive for change, or seek to better your situation. It just means that while you are here, in this moment, you will make the best you can of it and enjoy what there is to be enjoyed.
There is no point swimming against a current that is stronger than you. There are different ways in which to protest and to fight. Why not lie on your back and float, conserving your energy until the tide changes direction? By sitting back and choosing to create calmness you will also open your eyes to opportunities that you might otherwise have missed.
By choosing to create calmness, you enjoy the moment more readily and also spot opportunities more easily.
