Doubters in the reality or efficacy of hypnosis should take heed of the increasing number of clinical trials involving hypnosis that are being carried out. The sheer fact that such research has somehow found a way in which to be funded speaks volumes in itself.

Medical research into hypnosis is never going to be funded by drug companies or similar types of major investors. Thus funding must come from other areas and is not so easy to come by.

A quick look at the US National Institutes of Health Clinical Trials webpage reveals details of 66 trials involving hypnosis. This is great news for those who are interested in holistic treatments as well as mainstream medicine.

There is inevitably a right time and place for different types of medical treatment. But for a treatment to be fully accepted and widely available it first has to prove itself through the process of unbiased research.

One great thing about hypnosis that makes it stand out is that it has no negative side effects and therefore the only risk to a person who employs it is confined to time and money. Medical scientists should therefore not find it difficult to locate sufficient numbers of willing volunteers for their clinical research studies.

An individual who does not want to spare sufficient time to volunteer as a research subject does also have the opportunity to conduct his or her own research. There are many hypnosis mp3 downloads readily available via the Internet. I would suggest that the use of these is approached with an open mind.

Hypnosis is no different from other medical treatments in that the more open minded and positive you are the better the outcome is likely to be. This does not mean that hypnosis is just a placebo. It is not. But the placebo affects the use of hypnosis as a medical treatment or adjunct in the same way as other treatments including that of drugs.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Meditation

When you have a conversation about hypnosis there are several standard reactions that the average person displays. Most frequently hypnosis is either automatically classed as something like the occult, a kind of voodoo thing, or quite simply a put up job, an illusion like magic. A secondary string of thought tends towards the "you couldn't hypnotize me" variety.

Despite the fact that so many people don't think there is any real truth in the phenomenon of hypnosis, these same people rarely offer to become a subject. A little trepidation is usually in evidence, just in case hypnosis really is real and they could inadvertently fall beneath the hypnotist's threatening spell.

There are in fact many misconceptions about hypnosis, relating to whether it does really happen, what it is and what you can do with it. Hypnosis is a normal and natural state of mind that is far from being threatening. Hypnosis is in fact a particularly enabling state, providing it's user with the ability to overcome obstacles to their focus, behavior and emotional well being.

As is true with all forms of therapeutic intervention, the more motivated user inevitably achieves a greater degree of success. If you really want to achieve something you are more likely to apply an open and willing mind.

One way in which a person can overcome their trepidation about hypnosis is to use a hypnosis recording whilst remaining safely within the secure walls of their own home. There's no risk of giving away your deepest and darkest secrets here! Not that this would ever happen, if you didn't want it to, that is. There’s also no fear of being manipulated or controlled, if that happens to be your fear.

Yet other people have a different fear. Some people worry that a recording just couldn't possibly work. They want to go deep. Their fear is not of hypnosis. Rather, their fear is that it might not work for them. But a recording has been scientifically proven to be just as effective as a live induction in a Meta study carried out at the Mount Sinai school of medicine.

And yes, I did just refer to significant scientific research appertaining to the therapeutic benefits of hypnosis. Hypnosis is very real, very natural, incredibly enabling and it's easy to use. There is a growing body of scientific evidence that supports its effectiveness in many spheres of life.

Hypnosis has generally been thought of as a "fringe therapy", something that only people who are a little bit weird would turn to. Their friends smile and nod politely when told that he or she is making a visit to a hypnotherapist or listening to a hypnosis mp3, but decline to pass real comment.

But things really are changing in how people perceive hypnosis, as is inevitable once serious research is conducted by recognized professionals and significant results are documented. Thanks to Google, you and I, the general public, can access much of this research into hypnosis and decide for ourselves if there is sufficient proof of it's worth.

The body of scientific research into hypnosis really is becoming quite impressive. It has been proven to reduce perception of pain, to be an effective treatment in overcoming fears, phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder, to decrease recovery time from surgery, amongst many other valuable benefits.

I am not going to make an exhaustive list for the purpose of this article. I'm merely providing a brief glimpse into the many potential uses of hypnosis as a taste of what you can discover for yourself with a little bit of online research.

You might like to check out the American Psychological Association website or recognized and respected journals sub as PubMed online to read for yourself how hypnosis can be used to help in many areas. An informed patient is always a better patient. It's therefore better to do your homework in the form of research as opposed to just "giving hypnosis a go".

Once you have read significant scientific research that proves the efficacy of hypnosis, documented in a Journal that you trust and respect, your expectation of a good outcome will increase significantly. The placebo effect is something apart from hypnosis but it does still come into play, just as it does with mainstream medicine.

There are inevitably many different ways in which one can work with hypnosis. It's important to find a well-qualified hypnotherapist with a lot of experience. But that of course is just plain old common sense. You don't need me to tell you that.

Hypnosis can be used to recollect traumatic events and produce a catharsis, to stabilize and reduce symptoms, to project emotions, utilize imagination, to reconstruct memories, to age regress, to rehabilitate. There are many therapeutic ways in which hypnosis can be used to assist in a wide variety of areas.

When I use the term "wide variety" what I really mean is that hypnosis can be used in any area that has a psychological component. That's pretty much everything.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Meditation

As we age it is undeniable that our bodies do not function as smoothly nor as efficiently as they used to when we were younger. As my doctor once said to me "a woman's body is like a car. Once it begins to break down it keeps on breaking down". I’m sure that if his patient had been a man he would have adapted what he said to apply in a similar manner.

Age and wear and tear clearly impact upon our bodies. What is less clear to many of us, yet at the same time obvious to some, is that our minds have a major impact upon our bodies throughout our lives.

The thoughts and feelings we have are reflected and mirrored by our physical body. Messages are sent from brain to nerves and muscles and back again time and again throughout the day and night. Messages of pain may be sent from body to brain to alert us to the fact that something is wrong. In reverse, the thoughts we have are converted into neuro-transmitters and sent around the physical body. This exchange of information is a two way process.

You will no doubt be aware of this in small ways. When you feel down, or your thoughts are despondent, you will find that your shoulders stoop and your body slumps. When you are falling in love you will feel an endless flow of energy and find yourself bounding around with a spring in your step.

A persons predominant thoughts and emotions become etched in the lines upon their face, permanently displayed in laughter lines or a scowl, an upturned mouth or one which is downturned, and so on. All can easily see these reflections of mind upon body. Not as easy to spot are physical signs and symptoms which do not rest upon the surface.

Physical symptoms such as high blood pressure, heart disease or IBS are less easily seen as reflections of mental thoughts. But your mind will undeniably have an impact upon any form of disease within your body; it may not be the root cause of the disease, but it will have some effect. Much research has been carried out which adequately demonstrates this point.

Your mind is absolutely your best complementary health aid, should you choose to use it. You can take advantage of the fact that messages are sent backwards and forwards between brain, nerves, muscles and cells. You can send messages to your body that have specific intent; The intent to assist your body to heal successfully and to remain healthy.

Hypnosis may be use to add extra impact to such messages and to speed up the healing process. Hypnosis has in fact been proven to be of great assistance in many areas of complementary health. It's easy to use, quick to have an impact and has no nasty side effects.

The word Zen comes from the Chinese word chan and means to attain enlightenment through meditation. Enlightenment means to awaken, to become aware and to understand the nature of all that is.

There are many different forms of Zen Meditation. One of which is called Zazen which means to study the self. In Zazen meditation, particular importance must be paid to how we are seated in preparation. The seating position must allow total body stability and total openness, allowing the breath to flow effortlessly and easily.

The optimal seating position is to sit on the floor with a small pillow under your behind, cross your legs and allow your knees to touch the floor. At first, most people find this difficult but as the muscles relax, the knees naturally drop to the floor with practice. In this position you should try to keep your feet flat on the floor and straighten your spine. You should be sitting on the front third of the pillow only. This position provides the most stability. It is a pyramid shape and it is believed that using this position allows the body, breath and mind to become one. There are other positions but this position described above is the easiest for beginners.

Other important factors of preparation you should pay attention to are to keep your mouth closed and breathe through your nostrils only. Your eyes should gaze down at the floor about 3 feet in front of you. The eyelids will naturally be half closed in this position. Place your dominant hand in an upright position on top of your other hand which is also facing upwards, knuckles lined up and touch your thumbs lightly together. This is called the cosmic mudra. This position of the hands is believed to focus our minds inward.

Once achieving all these vital positions for successful Zazen meditation, it’s time to focus on what is called the Hara. The Hara is positioned two inches above your navel. This energy centre is believed to be the centre of the body’s spiritual and physical manifestation. The more you practice on focusing on this point, the more you will be drawn inward and hence studying the self.

Begin rocking gently back and forth finding your centre of gravity. Once you have found your centre of gravity, rest in this position. Continue focusing on your hara and imagine that you are breathing into this energy centre. Now start counting one through to ten in your mind. Each time you have an interrupting thought within your count, acknowledge it and then begin counting again. With practice you will be able to continue focusing on the count without any interruptions of distracting thought.

Once you have been able to achieve the counting without any interruptions, you will notice that you are more aware, Zazen now begins, and you begin to open up. Now focus on the inhalations and exhalations. Start to count each inhalation and exhalation. Continue to count until you can just comfortably focus on the breathing without the need to count. In this part of the meditation, thoughts will arise at random; let each thought run its course from the point of being the observer. Observe your thoughts. These thoughts need to arise and may occur several times during your meditation but allow them to happen until they resolve themselves. Then return to the count of the inhalations and exhalations.

This is Zazen meditation, with practice the arising thoughts will lessen and you will truly be focused inwards and on the self. Just remember to allow the thoughts to arise, allow them to run their course. They need to be brought to your attention in that moment then allow them to abate.

Isochronic tones are specially produced sounds that are designed to allow your brain to resonate at a certain frequency. By listening to isochronic tones which are played into both ears simultaneously, allows the meditator to enter into difference states of consciousness. These states can be that of relaxation, meditation or even cause you to go to sleep. An isochronic tone played at a rapid tempo, causes the listener to enter into higher frequencies. Whereas a slow tempo creates low frequencies.

Isochronic music can be listened to without using headphones and is more effective at brain wave entrainment than any other form of meditation music. Isochronic tones on their own tend to be very unsettling for the listener. Hence are often incorporated into gentle soothing music.

In our everyday lives we experience many different frequencies of brainwaves corresponding to our experiences of life. For example: When we are stressed, our brainwaves typically cycle at 40 hertz. If you were to play music that was cycling at 10 hertz, your brainwaves would slow down matching the music’s frequency. This is a form of brainwave entrainment; with practice it allows you to adjust your minds frequencies to suit our every day life challenges.

The frequency range of our minds can be anywhere between zero and a hundred cycles per second. In the low range 0-4 cycles per second, this is a state called Delta. Typically in delta mode we experience deep sleep without any dreaming. Theta is next with a range of 4-8 cycles per second. In this state we experience dreaming associated with rapid eye movement when sleeping. It is also often experienced during hypnosis or deep states of meditation. Alpha brainwaves 8-12 cycles per second we would be experiencing a state of relaxation. It is associated with daydreaming and the release of the feel good hormone serotonin. Beta Brainwaves are experienced in a state of wakefulness. Its frequency is 12-34 cycles per second. It is a state of engagement, focus, learning and creativity. In the low ranges of Beta we are typically experience concentration and alertness. However in the higher ranges it is associated with feeling of anxiety, stress and inability to concentrate. Gamma brainwaves are considered the optimal mind state. Cycling at 34-100 cycles per second. This state is associated with compassion, higher brain function and greater states of awareness.

Isochronic tones can alter our brainwaves and effectively allow us to experience altered states of consciousness. We can train our minds to recognize these frequency ranges as discussed above and enter patterns which are beneficial to our well being.
Not only do these tones alter our brainwave frequencies, they also have a positive effect on our bodily functions. They dramatically slow down our heart rates, reduce blood pressure and boost our immune systems. Many of the Isochronic music cd’s available are designed for specific outcomes. Such as reducing anxiety, reducing stress, improving sleep patterns and can help with depression. There are many other Isochronic therapies available.

I have experienced a profound effect by using Isochronic tones and use them regularly in my day to day life to improve my states of mind. I would recommend you try Isochronic tones for yourself. There are many websites available that allow you to sample a range of selections for free. Try before you buy is always the best option.
