When you put yourself down you set in motion a cycle of negative effect. From an individual perspective you will find it more difficult to achieve many things but there is also a detrimental impact upon those who surround you. Other people will frequently, unconsciously or consciously, privately or overtly, put you down too.

There will of course be friends and family members who love you and fight your corner and stand up for you. They will constantly tell you not to put yourself down. They will tell you how intelligent you are, how beautiful you are and how proud they are of you.

But if you don't believe them their support and encouragement has little impact upon your psyche. And your constant denial of your own abilities inevitably unconsciously rubs off upon even your most loving supporters.

Life is not as enjoyable, happy or easy when you put yourself down. Everything becomes a struggle and an effort. You avoid many things as well. Whenever a person starts a thought with "I can't do this" or "I'm no good at that" they effectively place a huge barrier between them and that which they might wish to do, be or achieve.

My father used to say, "there's no such word as can't". He did not allow us to use that word, or at the very least he poked fun at us when we did attempt to utilize it. This I think is a helpful way to remind yourself not to put yourself down. Whenever you catch yourself thinking or saying anything that begins with "I can't" you could remind yourself that there is no such word in the English vocabulary.

In this way you force yourself to change the thought for something better. "I don't want to" or "I don't think I can do" are more malleable phrases and allow you to at least begin to think in a more positive way. "I can't" is final. "I don't think I can" leaves you room to change your mind and find a way to feel that you can do whatever it is.

Once you begin to think about ways in which you can change there are many things that might assist. Instead of putting yourself down, you can discover new ways through which you can build yourself up. You soon discover that in most areas of life, if you think that you can do something you will be able to, whereas if you think you can't you won't be able to. How you think about yourself dictates the outcome that you experience.

Confidence in yourself is so very important. It is pivotal to success or failure, happiness or unhappiness, feeling constrained or feeling free to fully experience what life has to offer. There are many methods that you can employ so as to help build confidence and hypnosis is one of these.

Hypnosis is very powerful because it allows you to access the inner workings of your mind and adjust the deep-rooted beliefs and expectations that are stored therein. Hypnosis is natural and easy to use and all too frequently misunderstood and therefore overlooked.

Every child has a dream. We don't just have one dream. We have many dreams. As children our imaginations may even seem to run wild with the dreams that can feel so very real.

Children play with toys that are intended to encourage their imaginations to take flight. A vast part of a child's early experience is spent in dreaming. We learn through those dreams. We progress through allowing ourselves to imagine something and then trying to make that dream come true.

As children grow into adulthood many of these dreams become tempered by reality. More focus tends to be spent on the acquisition of logical skills as opposed to allowing flights of imagination to remain of prime importance.

Some people's reality becomes so constrictive that they no longer dare to dream. Others hang onto their dreams but in a kind of fuzzy way, pushed to the back of their minds. A lucky few dare to live their dream.

As young children we do not know that there are risks associated with dreaming. Fear of loss only comes once you realize that it is possible to lose. How we respond to loss depends on the individual. Some people stop trying whilst others try harder.

Many adults find themselves in a position whereby they come to realize that they have given up on their dreams. Life has become a daily routine with no real goal at the end and perhaps no real enjoyment along the way. At the opposite end of the scale, some people cling so determinedly to their dreams that all they have time for it that end goal, eschewing reality along the way.

Somewhere in the middle there are those who manage to strike a happy balance between dreaming and reality. They haven't lost their dreams and yet their feet remain firmly planted upon the ground of reality. They haven't become disillusioned. Rather, they have adapted their dreams to fit with their reality and also adapted their reality to suit their dreams.

To make your dreams come true your imagination and reality have to find a way in which to co-exist. In point of fact imagination paves the way to making that dream come true. Your dreams shape the reality that you experience. This is why it is so very important not to give up. Everyone should dare to dream. Without a dream you lose the light that illuminates life and creates happiness, fun and success.

If you would like to encourage in yourself the revival of your natural instinct to dream you will find self-hypnosis a helpful form of assistance. In hypnosis your creative mind comes to the fore. You can with hypnosis add extra impact to your dreams as they become firmly fixed in your subconscious mind.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

What do you see each morning as you awaken and begin to move around and start your day? More importantly, how do you feel upon awakening to a new day?

Some people hop out of bed with a spring in their step whilst others roll over and bury their head beneath their covers. A few people stretch like a cat and luxuriate in their waking up process. A lot can be inferred from this type of behavior about your attitude towards your day and towards life in general.

When autumn comes do you notice all the shades of red, terracotta, orange and gold in the trees, hedgerows and pathways? Or does autumn pass you by virtually unnoticed? Life is rich in so many aspects, but sadly many people do not notice much of the beauty that surrounds them.

Why is this? Some people would say that they are too busy and pressed for time to waste their energy upon the mundane. They do not see a purpose in noticing the scenery and such like. Others are too anxious or tense to really notice their surroundings. A few people prioritize the richness of nature and detail in their lives.

We do all have a choice in how we live our lives and the priorities that we pursue. Despite this the majority of people feel as if they have found their way onto a treadmill from which they cannot get off. What most people will agree upon though is that when you do take the time to look around and really see the beauty of nature you feel a sense of peace and calm.

To take time to live in the now and really notice the moment instead of focusing your attention in either the past or the future does inevitably instill a sense of calm and relaxation. There is no fear in the now. There is no regret in the now. There is just what is happening right now, what you can see and feel right now.

In contrast, when you spend your time focusing in either the past or the present you miss out on the true richness that surrounds you. You don't see all of the beauty, the colors, the minutiae of detail. When you do not focus clearly in the now, you do not see clearly and so things become lackluster, fuzzy and dull in comparison to how they really are.

If life appears this way to you then it is a worthwhile exercise to stop for a moment, to press your pause button and look around you to see what is really there. Take each of your senses in turn and really focus upon each one and notice how much more of life’s richness you perceive.

Hypnosis is also something that you might like to consider when you want to take a step back and appreciate the moment. Hypnosis is a state of relaxation. It is natural and easy to use simply by listening to a hypnosis mp3 download. Hypnosis also allows access to your subconscious mind that is the part where automatic and instinctive thoughts are stored. Therefore with hypnosis you can change such thoughts and instinctive reactions.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

Every day brings fresh happenings, unique situations and circumstances to those who look at the world with new eyes. Every day carries with it many opportunities to find and to create joy, so long as this is the outcome that you seek.

A gentleman in a store asked me the other day how the day was going for me. I provided a one-word answer - "perfect". A look of surprise came over his face and then he admitted that I was the first person who had provided that answer in the two year period that he had asked the same rhetorical question of every customer who stood on the opposite side of his counter.

Apparently most people respond that their day is pretty average, so-so or in fact pretty awful. Few people state that their day is going well, let alone that it is great or perfect. Don't you find that sad?

An octogenarian friend whom I admire greatly often quips, "If you're not having fun it's your own fault". Some people work their way through life with endless curiosity, humor and enthusiasm whilst others sadly do not. Living with an attitude of childlike wonder and joy makes life so much better in very many ways; it's more fun, more enjoyable and a whole lot easier on the mind and body.

The people who have this light and bright attitude do always acknowledge that their attitude is their own choice. They recognize that they have chosen to view their world in this way. In contrast, those who have a bleaker outlook on life tend to believe that they do not have a choice in this matter, that life has thrown them a tough, difficult or unfair hand.

Once you realize that you do have a choice in how you view circumstances, irrespective of how good or bad those circumstances happen to be, you will find that a huge weight is simultaneously lifted from your shoulders. You immediately step out from beneath black and threatening clouds and instead find that you can see blue sky and bright sunlight.

Happiness comes from within. Happiness does not derive from circumstances or events; rather, it comes from choosing to see your world in a relaxed, comfortable and positive manner. In choosing to take responsibility for the way in which you think, you free yourself to enjoy the inherent beauty of your world.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

Many people think that they will find happiness when in fact they reach out in search of pleasure. They think that in finding pleasure they will also find happiness. But there is a distinction between the two and pleasure does not always (or even often) lead to the happiness. Happiness is experienced in the moment, whereas pleasure is only felt for a moment.

Pleasure can be easily felt through little things, like eating chocolate, when you taste its gooey sweet texture upon your tongue. Yet that pleasure is quickly dissipated, frequently followed by pangs of guilt. The pleasure was only felt for a fleeting moment and then it disappeared without trace. It did not lead to happiness.

Happiness will enable you to experience pleasure in greater depth and quantity. For example when you feel happy and eat chocolate you will enjoy the chocolate more than if you are feeling sad. When you feel happy and you are relaxed in the moment, pleasure is felt in everything that you see and do. Happiness opens your world to more pleasure more often. It prolongs and deepens your experiences of pleasure.

It is vitally important to be able to distinguish between happiness and pleasure. Many people fall into the same trap again and again; the trap of focusing upon pleasure in the misguided expectation or hope that through pleasure they will find happiness.

We have all fallen for this fallacy from time to time. We think that if we lose weight, have a new hair-cut, eat chocolate or ice-cream, have more money, achieve more success, and so on, we will then be happy. But in doing this we defer happiness. We are barking up the wrong tree.

Happiness comes from within as opposed to being derived from momentary symbols of pleasure. Happiness in felt in the moment. It is not based upon the tenet that "If I have XYZ I will then be happy". Happiness doesn't work like that. Happiness in felt whether you have ZXY or not. Happiness comes from you, not from what you have.

Once you appreciate that momentary pleasure does not lead to long-term happiness, you can stop wasting time, effort and money on these illusions. In fact, happiness is felt as soon as you start to look for it in the right place. Happiness is felt in the moment, in the present, and it comes from the way in which you choose to look at things.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

Human beings are prone to feelings of uncertainty from time to time. Some of us experience these qualms only occasionally whilst for others it is an almost perpetual state. If you fall within the latter category then you will appreciate that this feeling is rather uncomfortable to say the least.

Nobody should have to live with this type of discomfort and there is no need to do so if you are willing to step back and examine what has made you how you are today. Your experience now is in fact the effect of the sum total of your beliefs and expectations. If your beliefs and expectations do not sit comfortably upon your shoulders then it is likely that they do not reflect who you really are.

In self-exploration, you might discover that your beliefs and expectations are struggling against your true nature and denying who you really are. Many of us harbor beliefs that are erroneous. Many of us have expectations that are based upon what we think others would like to see in us but are not reflective of our own true desires or beliefs.

So as to be true to yourself there comes a time when it is appropriate to let go of everything that is not you. Every human being is both molded and malleable to a great degree, but there comes a point where our own nature is no longer willing to be stretched or prodded into someone else's idea of conformity.

Many people are frightened though by the prospect of letting go of beliefs and expectations that they have harbored for so long. They are scared too of what other people might think of them. We are undeniably creatures who inherently crave approval. We fear loss of approval and loss of face, both of which are demonstrative of love. Love is the basic feeling that we most desire.

But unless we allow our true nature to shine through we will never have a true feeling of self-love. And unless we love ourselves, we will not be able to really believe that anyone else will love us either.

You can see the chicken and egg of this situation can't you? We cling to what approval we can get from others and are loath to let go of what we have for fear of losing out on that love, but in that very act of clinging on we deny our true nature and therefore deny ourselves of true love.

There is an additional fear. We worry about what our true nature really is. Who are you once those erroneous beliefs and false expectations are released? It is only by the act of stripping away those layers of beliefs and expectations that you will discover your true nature, your own uniqueness and individuality. In the act of releasing false thought processes you experience the freedom and joy of being true to yourself and comfortable in your own skin.

Hypnosis is an enabling and empowering state of mind for those who wish to embark upon and succeed in the voyage of self-discovery, self-love and self-realization. Hypnosis can truly open your mind to your true and inherent potential.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

Opening yourself to love not only allows you to enter into nurturing relationships, it also promotes good health and well-being. This effect can often be seen even to the naked eye. We describe someone who is in love as "glowing" because their skin takes on a beautiful luster and everything about them seems to come alive, to dance and to sparkle. A person in love becomes radiant.

Someone who is in love will find that they feel more vibrant and animated. They can barely sleep and live in a whirl of excitement and anticipation. They seem to have an endless store of energy and nothing appears to be too much trouble.

The aspects that are less obvious to the naked eye are more obvious to those who are involved in the medical profession. Medical research has identified an irrevocable connection between good relationships and better health. The better your relationship and the more supportive your home environment the healthier you are likely to be and the longer you will live.

These latter mentioned benefits of opening yourself to love frequently go unnoticed by the majority of people who just assume their good health is due to good genes, healthy living or just good luck. They are a long-term effect of love and so not so easy to connect in our minds. Cause and effect in this case does not appear to us in an obvious manner.

There is an undeniable connection between love and resilience. We need love in the same way as a flower blossoms in sunlight. Without love, we wither. We experience love in many forms. To have a one to one close and loving relationship is only one aspect of love. To treat everyone and everything you come across in life with a loving intent is equally important.

Love and peace are the opposites of anger and hate. One nurtures whilst the other destructs. Love is like sunshine as compared to the volcanic lava and ash of anger and hate. Which would you prefer to bathe in, or to be bathed in?

It is actually your preference, your choice, that dictates this particular outcome. What you give out you tend to get back. Give freely of love and you will usually receive love in return, and you should also receive a big paycheck in the future in terms of good health.

Love brings both happiness and good health. There are any number of good reasons why we should not harden our hearts to love. There are very few reasons, if any, to support an opposite choice. If fear or ideas about self-protection hold you back from opening yourself to love, then it is important that you realize that you can choose to overcome those blockages.

Hypnosis is a great help in assisting one who wishes to overcome fears, build confidence, feel happier and ultimately open your mind to love.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

What you do today inevitably affects what happens in your tomorrow, although at the time you can have little idea of the extent of that impact. We spend much of our lives planning for our future, imagining what we would like to achieve and hoping that we attain our goals and live our dreams.

I spent a very happy day with friends yesterday golfing at the Presidio in San Francisco. As we travelled home, one friend asked "When you were a child, growing up in Ireland, did you ever imagine that you would be driving along this road today with three Asian ladies in a car, on the way back from golf?" No, not in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to be where I am today! But I am truly blessed to be where I am today.

My friend has lived in many different parts of the World, and she commented on the various times she would suddenly ask herself how she got to be where she was. She would look around at her friends in Japan and ask herself how she got there from California, or how she ended up in New York, or in London.

The further afield one moves from home the more dramatically you notice the differences. My friends question coincided with a message sent to me via Facebook from a girl I went to school with in 1972 and had not seen since 1979. She sent an old school photograph, showing thirty-two little girls and boys aged from four to fourteen. This was the entire school, not just one class. The school had just two rooms, one teacher and an assistant.

How did I get from a remote and beautiful spot in Southern Ireland to San Francisco and Silicone Valley? The chain of events is far too detailed to even begin to write the steps down. In fact, I'm sure that I would overlook the impact of some key events, even if I tried to carefully identify each and every twist and turn.

The fact is that every little thing that you experience, or that you are exposed to, has the power to impact greatly upon your tomorrow. Each person you meet, each song you hear, each decision you make shapes your future reality. Not only that, World events, or the norms of society also have a huge bearing.

How tall you are will have great impact upon whether or not you have the potential to be an Olympic swimmer or professional basketball player. Your parent's style of parenting will have a huge influence upon your dedication to schoolwork, specific favored subjects, how interested you are in sports or music and how you make friends and socialize.

These are just a few examples of how events from yesterday create the today in which we live. Each event or happening is likely to predispose us to make choices one way or another. But this still does not mean that we will make the most likely choice. We still have the ability to choose unlikely and unusual routes through life.

If you are unhappy where you are it is important to look closely at how you got there so as to be able to understand what changes you will have to make so as to make tomorrow better. The most essential factor which liberates a person and enables positive change is to grasp the fact that no matter what has happened in your life, no matter what circumstances are presented to you, you do have the power to make choices which will change your future experiences.

The biggest obstacle to positive change is when one thinks that they cannot change or that they are powerless to change their reality. If you think that you are stuck, then you will remain stuck. If you instead accept that you have felt stuck up until now but anything can happen from now on, then anything can indeed happen.

If you feel unhappy in any way, and would like to open your mind up to making positive change, then hypnosis is a very useful means of expanding your potential.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

I suspect that almost everyone is affected by the weather. If you live in a place where the climate is almost always bright and sunny, you probably crave a spot of cool now and again. However, your moods will probably be less affected than those of people who live in darker and damper climes. It is easier to feel brighter and more optimistic when presented with a warm and sunny day.

When you live in a part of the hemisphere that is greatly affected by fluctuations between dark and light, grey or blue skies, rain or sunshine, then it is difficult to not be affected in some emotional sense by this changeability. As autumn changes into winter and the nights draw in you feel more confined and restricted. You simply cannot do all of those things that you enjoyed doing in the evenings during the long and light days of summer.

When you awaken in the morning and are presented with darkness as you open your bedroom curtains you might feel your mood quite simply dropping downwards. As dawn breaks and the day begins you look forward to lightness and brightness entering your day. Therefore when the skies remain grey and dark clouds loom ominously above it can be difficult to lift your mood and lighten your spirit.

People can be forgiven for wishing that they could just curl up and hibernate for the winter and simply reawaken in the springtime when skies and blue and temperatures have risen. That said we have to live within the reality of what we are presented with. We cannot always live our dreams.

We have to learn to live with the affect of the weather upon our psyche and seek our own ways to lift our spirits and brighten our moods. It is very easy to focus upon what we are missing out upon or what we haven't got, but in doing this we sink into an ever-deeper rut, making it impossible to climb out of.

It is instead vitally important to focus upon the things that we do have, the things that are good and enjoyable in our lives. On those darker and colder nights we can enjoy the warmth and beauty of a crackling log fire. We can take time to appreciate the beauty of our homes, friends and families. We can focus upon projects and gain a sense of achievement. We can read all of those books we meant to read and catch up upon movies that we meant to watch.

There are in fact many things that you can do to stop yourself being afflicted by SAD. Eating well, ensuring that you exercise, focusing upon interests, hobbies and friendships are all obvious forms of self-help and act to prevent the onset of SAD. Meditation or self-hypnosis are also good sources of relaxation and comfort.

The use of self-hypnosis can also be extended to include utilizing your senses to imagine the effect of sunshine on your mind and body. You can use your mind in this way to trigger a spontaneous endorphin release, raising your mood naturally and lifting your spirits.

By: Roseanna Leaton
Category: Happiness

Life presents us with many choices. Sometimes we feel that we have taken a wrong turn and chosen the wrong road. When we look back we can see that there were signposts visible at that junction, although at the time we didn't pay them sufficient heed. Many things are easier with the benefit of hindsight.

Perhaps the route you chose was not in fact wrong. You simply look back and feel that it was wrong. It is highly possible that wherever you are is where you are meant to be in order to traverse a particular learning curve in this life.

Life is a learning opportunity, and unfortunate as it may be, we do often learn better through the mistakes we make than from getting things right first time. Every cloud does indeed have a silver lining. Mistakes are in fact opportunities in disguise.

Whether you feel that you have taken the wrong road or not there is no point in crying over spilt milk. By all means look back and appreciate how you came to be where you are now, but instead of feeling disappointed ask yourself what lessons you have learned.

Reverting to the comment I made before about there having been signposts at each and every twist and turn in the road that you have chosen, it is true that we only end to see that which we expect to see. When you look back and realize that those signposts were there you will also appreciate that you were always aware of them to a certain degree.

Most often this awareness is felt in a sort of emotional-logical tug-of-war. You know what you want and you know what you should do, but these two things are not in tune with each other. When this happens we find ways to justify the things that we want, or try to bury inhibitions and charge forwards no matter what. We effectively "turn a blind eye" to our own objections and carry right on doing what we want to do. Looking back you might wish that you had listened.

The truth is that sometimes choices are difficult to make and sometimes compromises have to be made. The more confident you feel in yourself, and the greater your awareness of your own moral code and the standards you wish to live by, the easier it is to make wise choices for yourself. The more present you are in the moment the more aware you will be of your surroundings and those signposts will be more easily visible to you. In this way the choices you make will be better informed instead of impulsive or random.
