By: Roy Thomsitt
Category: Goal Setting

Setting goals and objectives is a process which has very wide application in business, and it was certainly a part of my own business training which I had to put into practice regularly in the years that followed. Some of the better businesses and organizations will also incorporate personal goal setting into staff development, as part of the personnel (human) resources routine. But what about you as an individual?

Can you use goal setting as a tool to help you achieve success? Goal setting can, indeed, be a very useful, sometimes powerful assistant to your personal success. If you incorporate goals and objectives into your personal planning, whether short or long term, then your road to success will have a better foundation.

Success? Success at what? That is entirely up to you. If there is something in life you want to succeed at, then there will no doubt be some goals you can set to help you along the way; like stepping stones across a river when success is the opposite bank. In reality, you can apply goal setting techniques to any part of your life, whether it is to do with work, personal relationships, where you want to live, or a personal hobby or interest. So long as you set realistic goals at each stage, then they can be a very strong personal incentive, which will prepare you for the next stage. Eventually you will be able to look back and see how far you have come, and you can wave goodbye to those stepping stones and go on to new ones on another journey to success.

If you settle down and think clearly about what you want to succeed in, and then what you need to achieve in order to get there, you will quite naturally give a structure to a plan which you will follow; a structure that will incorporate goals you will need to achieve along the way. As with business goals and plans, your personal goals need to be realistic. If you have never driven a car and decide you want to be a Formula One race driver, then it does not make a lot of sense to go directly to Ferrari HQ and say "Here I am, can I race for you in next weeks Grand Prix?" If you are determined enough, you may become an F1 driver, but there are a few little goals to achieve first.

That applies to just about anything. You need to pinpoint the key achievements along the way to success in whatever it is you wish to succeed in, set an appropriate series of goals, and then tick them off one by one. It is important to think clearly about your personal goals, as they are just that, personal. They are not your husbands goals, you parents' goals, or your brothers goals, they are yours. Keep focused on what you want to achieve, not what others would like you to achieve from their own viewpoint. Use the opportunity to incorporate lifestyle goals into your plan, such as living by the sea, having a nice house, anything that is important to you. Even happiness benefits from goal setting; you can think about everything that would make you happy, and then set goals to achieve each of those elements.

Having decided your goals, then put them together in a plan that is realistic, otherwise you may be despondent after missing a goal which was impossible anyway. Set a reasonable timescale, and then try to aim for it step by step. If your chosen area of success is a competitive one, then remember that most people will just give up. But you will not give up, will you? This setting personal objective article was written by Roy Thomsitt, owner and part author of the Routes To Self Improvement website.

This year I decided to undertake a 30 day challenge, Lent had passed and since I am not particularly religious don’t really feel any allegiance to this event. However after hearing several people talk about their reasons for abstinence I started thinking about areas of my life I felt I would benefit from more discipline in. That weekend I was on a course and was struggling to concentrate following a terrible sleep brought on too much caffeine followed by too much alcohol the day before. There and then I decided that I had to do something and give up both for a short period.

The key thing initially for me was a real commitment – a 100 percent, nothing-will-get-in-my-way determination to do this. And what helped me was building up a really compelling picture of what my end game was, in my case feeling fitter, full of energy, more alert and capable of anything! And this was ‘locked in’ further by sharing this with another supportive person who would hold me accountable for sticking with my vows. Reflecting on this made me realise why so many people fail to stick to New Year’s resolutions…all too often they are made half heartedly without any true commitment at the outset.

But it is all very well setting goals and having the support of people around you…what happens once you enter your period of abstinence? Afterall anyone can have great intentions, it’s the action that counts. Giving up alcohol particularly for 30 days was always going to be a challenge. Whilst I certainly don’t classify myself as a heavy drinker I had become accustomed to a glass of wine, sometimes two most nights, just to help me unwind…a habit I have had for as long as I can remember.

The first couple of days felt easy, I had such an overwhelming sense of determination that there was no other option. My first hurdle came when it was my husband’s birthday, a time for celebrating and sharing, including a bottle of wine. I value connection highly and felt this was being somewhat compromised. We often underestimate the role our values (in other words what is most important to us) play in creating and breaking habits, and it is certainly helpful to have a clear grasp of what is driving our behaviour from the outset. If one value is at the root of our behaviour (for example you may value a sense of belonging, so by giving up a social habit it may help to create a sense of isolation) you need to find alternative ways of honouring this value.

Throughout this period I also became aware of my saboteurs in my head, always ready to trip me up with their words of discouragement – ‘you won’t be able to go the full mile,’ or ‘you’ve given up for a week now so why not just chill out!’ I had to put these to one side and stick resolutely to my commitment, at all times remembering my whole reason for doing this.

But probably overall the conclusion I drew at the end of this 30 days period is that it is all about discipline - pure and simple discipline. I have been used to making choices, free to do as I please, probably compounded by the fact I have not followed a particular faith, which in itself often requires levels of personal discipline. I then reflected and wondered where else in my life this lack of discipline was showing up. And unsurprisingly perhaps there were a number of areas.

So where do I take my learning from all this moving forward? I realise now the value of discipline – and having faced one of the toughest challenges I now feel far more equipped to tackle other challenges – in fact anything seems possible. I see discipline is a muscle to be exercised…the more we use it the more powerful we can become.

So next time you make a vow, whether it is part of your faith or even a commitment to your lifelong partner remember that discipline will be part and parcel of it, but instead of seeing this as a burden, view it as a gift of strength that will help you achieve anything.

Louise Yates has written much about effective goal setting and tips for success with New Years resolutions.
By: SA Perillo
Category: Goal Setting

How many people do you know that want to be entrepreneurs? How many of them do you think will succeed? A lot of people have a dream, but few of them actually possesses the right attitude and characteristics it takes to succeed. While it's easy to try, having a plan and thinking ahead are the things that will help you in the long run. Here are a few simple tips on how to be a successful entrepreneur:

1. Set Your Goals
Successful thinking what gets people going in the business. You need to set your goals high, and work on how to achieve them. However, beware of romanticizing your trip to the top; it's not all going to be easy. Keep in mind that things won't always go your way, but there are still some things that are important to plan for. Set specific, short-term and long-term goals that you can achieve step-by-step.

2. Be Realistic
Sure, we'd all like to dream big. When it comes to boosting morale and renewing your hopes, this is great. However, it's not the attitude that will get you to the top. Be realistic about your strengths and weaknesses so you can discover the things that work for you. Business is all about facts, numbers and strategy. If you're not honest to yourself, how can you expect to be honest in business?

3. Accept Your Weaknesses and Learn From Them
Business is not a field where you need the highest form of education in order to get ahead. Education would be helpful, but it's not necessary. The important thing is to learn about the field you're in. No book can compare to experience when it comes to teaching you about business. But most often than not, these lessons come with failure and mistakes. Once you learn how to accept and learn from your mistake, you won't repeat them again.

4. Talk the Talk
Who you know is just as important as what you known when it comes to business. The way you present yourself is a huge part of this. Always treat people with respect and courtesy. You never know who you're meeting, and there's no telling when you're going to meet a potential business partner. Remember: there's always a way to expand your network.

Being an entrepreneur is more than just dreaming big. These tips will help you acquire the skills you need to become a success.

By: Peter Grundner Category: Goal Setting Key #10 to Happiness – Setting Goals

By: Peter Grundner
Category: Goal Setting

Key #10 to Happiness – Setting Goals

There’re many reasons to set goals. People who set clear goals not only experience more success in their lives, but they are usually also happier and less stressed.

We can all look at our past and analyze different stages of our lives and see that we’ve been happier when we have had something to look forward to…and that is what having dreams, setting goals and visualizing them is all about. Goals are nothing more than dreams with a deadline.

But what about people who don’t have a clear passion or direction for their lives – no goals? Should they just pick something arbitrarily? If this describe you, don’t worry. Keep reading! There is a special section for you half way through this lesson.

Here are some of my favorite quotes on goal setting and success:

“The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly.” - Cecil B. De Mille

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” - Oscar Wilde

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” - Henry Ford

“Aim at heaven and you get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.” - C. S. Lewis

“Give yourself the freedom to explore the possibility of life without limits. Goals are dreams with deadlines, a means to an end but not the ultimate purpose of life.” - Glynis Nunn

Here is what the Bible says about fulfilling your purpose in life, goal setting and success:

"Where there is no vision, the people perish”. Proverbs 29:18

“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus”. Phil 3:14

“A man's heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

Goals give us focus. This is especially important when we’re depressed or down on ourselves. At those times, we need to take our focus off the current situation and focus or re-focus on the overall goals and dreams… or maybe set some new goals. Setting goals is a lifelong process that needs to be renewed and reviewed all the time…at least once every few months.

But what about people who don’t think they have any goals? Rest assured, God has put purpose and goals in every one of His masterpieces (humans that is, and that means you too). If you don’t think you have any goals, ask God to let the ones He’s put in your heart and spirit to bubble up to the forefront of your mind. Some people have never allowed themselves to know what they want. If this is you, just ask God to help you in this area. It’s His greatest joy to watch you become everything He planned for you!

People who think they have no goals are usually comparing themselves to others who are exceptionally ambitious and verbal about strong personal achievement goals. You know who I’m talking about – they are the ones who talk about being the president of a Fortune 500 company by the time they’re 40, a huge music or movie star, or the biggest contractor in the city by age 35! Of course some of these people will achieve these goals, and that’s great. Don’t forget however, the most important goal of all should be to hear those cherished words, “Well done good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things, now I will make you ruler over many” by Jesus Himself when He welcomes you into the Kingdom for all eternity! So, let the driven people be who they were meant to be – you get to be the person God made you to be! He has more good thoughts about you than there are grains of sand on all the seas of the world – and all these thoughts include great plans (and goals) for you. (Ps 139:17 & Jer 29:11)

Goal setting is important for all areas of our lives.
• Spiritual Goals (like being more like Jesus)
• Home (Family Goals like being a better spouse or a better father)
• Health Goals (like losing 20 lbs.)
• Business Goals (like increase sales)
• Financial Goals (like becoming debt free)
• Social Goals (like making some new friends)
• Charity Goals (like giving more)
• Other Important Goals (like having more balance)

Correct Goal Setting Process:
• Identify an overall goal or dream (let’s say that you would like to be healthier)
• Break the goal down into specific goals (like losing 24 lbs.)
• Set a deadline (like…lose 24 lbs. in 6 months)
• Break it down into monthly and weekly goals (4 lbs. per month or 1 lb. per week)
• Determine daily tasks (not eating desert or minimizing your calorie intake or running 3 times per week for 1 mile to achieve your goals).

Keys to happiness exercise:
• Ask God for help (ask Jesus into your life if you have not done so already)
• Take some time on finding a meaningful why and set long term goals – They can’t be someone else’s goals…they have to be your own.
• Set realistic goals – It’s the difference between successfully reaching your goals and setting yourself up for failure. Let’s say that you wanted to lose 24 lbs. If you have not run for 20 years, it would be foolish to set an action plan to run 10 miles per day. It’s better to be more conservative and increase your activity as you get a feel what you can realistically do.
• Be consistent with your activity – 90% of success is just showing up. Don’t underestimate this part. Better to commit to less and be consistent than to commit to too much and then quit soon after you start.
• Visualize your why and goals at least once each week
• Look at your goals and action plan several times per week and adjust it if necessary
• Hint - if you're unable to perform your daily and weekly tasks or start making excuses - spend more time on your why (you’re probably having trouble because it’s not real to you – most likely from someone else such as an overbearing parent, teacher or other influential person in your life – ask God to help you hear Him alone)

By: Kari Farmer
Category: Goal Setting

Most of us tend to do the same things when we are trying to reach our goals. We start by making a plan that covers the ideas and steps on how to reach our goal and then we begin moving along the steps of the plan. Most likely your ultimate plan looks something like this:

Step 1 – Do the work that is absolutely needed to reach the goal.

Step 2 – Do some unnecessary work that has nothing to do with goal but takes up time and seems important.

Step 3 – Do some more work that is absolutely needed to reach the goal.

Step 4 – Accomplish goal.

Doesn’t sound familiar? You may think that kind of plan, with the unnecessary steps, is not the way you go about reaching your goals, but in reality it most likely is.

This type of plan is used every single day for business, career, well being, and many other areas of our lives that require particular goals to be reached.

For example, do you want to lose weight or have you been trying to lose weight?

A plan for losing weight should look something like this.

Step 1 – Eat healthy food and exercise.

Step 2 – Reach goal weight.

We all know that’s true. We all know that essentially all we have to do is eat good food and exercise and the weight will come off. But most of us do something like this.

Step 1 – Eat healthy food and exercise.

Step 2 – Reward ourselves for doing so well by eating something unhealthy.

Step 3 – Stop exercising as hard and replace it instead with sitting around.

Step 4 – Gain a few pounds back.

Step 5 – Eat healthy food and exercise.

Step 6 – Give up and have that huge plate of nachos, huge plate of mozzarella sticks, and 5 glasses of pop.

Step 7 – Eat healthy food and exercise.

Step 8 – Reach goal. (This of course may be years after starting step 1 and having many other steps repeated over and over and over again)

Do you see the extra and unnecessary steps in order to reach our goal of losing weight? Do you see how much easier it would be to just eliminate all the steps in between 1 and 8 and just do it? Of course you do! And that’s all we have to do to accomplish our goals. This applies to all areas of our lives, not just weight loss.

It is that easy. The saying ‘Well it’s not that easy!’ is just an excuse you use when you don't get down to business and just do it. It really is that easy.

So go ahead and sit down and figure out what unnecessary steps are holding you back from reaching your goals and eliminate them. Stop doing them altogether and instead just focus on step 1. Do the work that needs to be done and get to your goals quicker.

If you are looking for a self improvement software to help you organize your day and life, then click here and read about the free, effective, and essential software that changed my life.

Article Source: Reach Your Goals More Effectively by Taking out A Step or Two

By: Stephen Kavita
Category: Goal Setting

We all can lead a fulfilling lifestyle if we commit ourselves seriously to goal setting and be ready to meet them. Everything comes from sacrifice, self commitment and in effect there really is no time to hesitate. Therefore, you must make a decision in time and take effective action. To be or not to be is the question.

If you choose to be great you must as a result work towards goal setting and not be afraid to try. Your fear of failure must be much lesser than your desire for success in order for you to achieve. It is after you begin something that you realize that it was not so difficult after all especially if accompanied with self commitment. You will discover that you were only underestimating yourself. Work and ambition will become your pleasure and you will never look back. You will be able to bury your dark past and be able to focus on a happier tomorrow. They say time is a great healer.

Hence as a person one must live their life to the fullest by being whole-hearted and dedicated to what they do. Once you enjoy doing what you do, it will make you happy and fulfilled. It gives your life a true meaning and direction. After goal setting try to self motivate yourself and do your very best and accepting every challenge that comes your way. This is because challenges are there to make you better therefore nothing should stop you from reaching your desired destiny in life. With commitment, ambition, focus and self-will no dream is impossible.

If you decide to neglect yourself and your ambition: to simply give up and stop pursuing your life desires them you are heading straight to misery. You will be a failure and will be insignificant since you can never expect something good to come out of laziness and neglect. Good fruits come from a well-tended tree while bad ones arise from impatience and carelessness. Today I challenge you to work towards high goal setting.

By: Stephen Kavita
Category: Goal Setting

In order to achieve success, you need to start setting smart goals. In short you must have a plan; a decisive strategy of reaching your goals. The strategy must be comprehensive and must provide proper guidance in all situations so that you always know what to do, when and how to do it.

When setting smart goals, ensure that they are worth the effort. Consider the specific advantages that you will enjoy if you succeed. This is what should inspire you to right away begin setting smart goals which are also achievable. This way you will know what you want and where you want to be at a particular time in future.

When you understand your current position and where you want to be in future, ask yourself questions like; is there anything that can hinder me from being successful? This way you will have the right mentality to tackle challenges. And most importantly, when setting smart goals always remember to review them periodically. This will help you gauge how far you have progressed and thus you may decide to revisit your goals.

Whenever you encounter difficult situations in life, always consider what motivated you in the first place. This will help raise your spirits to soar above your predicaments, thus the importance of setting smart goals. This is very necessary because challenges tend to make one lose focus and procrastinate. Psychologists advise that you to always see the positive side of things especially when faced with problems so as to ensure your success.

The level of commitment to a particular cause is a matter of what is important to you and what is not. If something really matters to you then you will take it seriously and what is valuable to you may not be so for someone else. Hence you must not yield to negative influence on your vision and plans. Hook up with like minded people. In addition, make a practice of reminding yourself about your goals and what they mean to you. When you value your goals and understand their importance to you, you will surely excel.
